I got laid off from my job on Dec. 4th 2008. I just got hired but my job doesn’t start till Mon. Feb. 30th. All of my bills are behind except for my rent. I need to file for bankruptcy in order to stop my car from being repossessed. The thing is I don’t know what will happen after bankruptcy. I want to own my own home. I’m tired of renting. How soon after I file for bankruptcy will I be able to purchase a house, and also if I pay off all of my debt during my Chapter 13 bankruptcy before the 5 years they are allowing me; will I be able to get discharged or do I have to wait until the 5 years are up before I get issued my discharge papers? Thanks for any help!

I know that Saturn’s business model and policy since they started has been the "no haggle" or "no dicker sticker" price, and most Saturn dealers can’t and won’t negotiate on prices. I am wondering if now, with car sales so low, GM in bankruptcy, and Saturn moving to a new owner, if maybe dealers aren’t so steadfast in this anymore. I would like to think that you can get the same incredible discounts on Saturns as you can with other GM vehicles, but rarely see Saturn ads where I live. I see some Chevrolets and others with several thousands taken off the sticker, sometimes with cash back on top of it. Would they let a customer leave and not buy the car if they wanted to negotiate? Seems like they would want to sell as many cars as possible, no matter the cost.

ETrade Financial, it was 23 per share earlier this year, and bottomed out at around 3.40 per share. I just wanted to get some second opinions on what the future of this company is going to be. I am a member of Etrade and trade stock within the online brokerage. but am not too sure about investing in it. Say they did file bankruptcy would I lost all my money in my etrade account? Also do you think this company is going to recover? Is it smart to buy stock in it? Also, if it does recover how long would it take for it to take back off? Thanks guys.

I filed for Chapter 7 in april ‘09 and had all my debts discharged. I recently applied for a FAFSA loan. At the end of the filing, the file said I might be eligible for a certain amount of pell grant money.

Will the bankruptcy have any bearing on whether or not I will get approved for either a loan or grant?

Ok.. apparently I wasn’t clear…

I want to dispute EVERYTHING to try to get it off his credit report. I know it will disappear after 7 years, but it has already been 5 and if they can’t verify within 30 days, don’t they have to remove it?

I want to know what steps I need to take to do this. Letters? Contact anyone? Prove they haven’t abided by laws…

Are there any websites that offer quick but thorough tenant screening, including credit score, liens, bankruptcy’s, payment history, ect? I’ve found alot of different websites but they all require me to fax them proof of ownership of the home, ect. Are there any sites that don’t require that? I need to be able to run this tenant screen asap and would rather not need to provide all that additional info. I currently live and own the home I want to rent, so don’t have an additional "mailing address", which some websites require as well.
Please no sarcastic answers. Thanks for everyones help!

I have a graduate degree, a masters in Public Administration w/ a concentration in HR & Finance. Unfortunately, I have been chronically unemployed since 2003 as companies are closed, downsize or outsource HR. After 7 years of struggle, I have lost my home to foreclosure, I am facing bankruptcy, and I am living off of my retirement savings, which is dwindling fast.
I am brainstorming on how to change my career path, frugally and expediently. From the research I’ve done, healthcare seems to be a good bet.
I think it would be wise for me to build on the education and experience I already have and compliment it in hopes of opening a door in the healthcare sector.
I found an online program via Seton Hall University, for a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Administration (5 courses, 15 credits, roughly k). Probably 6 months.
Has anyone taken an online graduate certificate course? Did it reap any rewards and was it a good investment of time and finances? Mostely, was it useful in segwaying into another career path?

We filed chapter 13 in 2006. It will be over in 2 years. Can we have a large sum of money in a savings account? Will the trustee find out about the savings account?

Hi,
My house is going under foreclosure and there are two loans. The second loan put a judgment on me. I am trying to sell the house under short sale. Will they come after me for whatever money they loose? If so, to what extent? If I file for bankruptcy will that take care of this mess so that I can begin to rebuild my life? I don’t have anything of value and currently unemployed and my family and I are actually living with my parents in their apartment now. I am a first time buyer and have not refinanced. The house was bought on November 2007. I also stopped paying about five months ago when all this began. Will this never end and will they come after me until I die?
WHAT CAN I DO?

I am currently filing a chapter 13 bankruptcy, and I talked to 2 different lawyers who suggest that I let my mortgage go into foreclosure. I am not late on my mortgage payments, but I am upside down in my loan. My place is literally a money pit. I need to have this place rewired, my water heater just went out. My lawyer suggests that I surrender my home, and rent a place for a few years. he thinks that I should be able to get a mortgage in 3 to 5 years. What do you think?

I work for a non-profit who is really struggling because of the economy. I am certain that the CEO will have to layoff some of the staff off in the coming months. I am not too worried about my job, however I am thinking it wouldn’t be the worst thing if I were to lose my job.

My husband and I lost our house to foreclosure a few months ago. We had a bad loan and ran up a lot of debt because we could not afford our mortgage without using credit cards to pay for everyday expenses like food and utilities. Now the 2nd mortgage has sent us a collections letter for the deficiency of k.

We were planning on seeing a bankruptcy attorney this week, because at this point our credit is already ruined. But, because of our combined income, we do not qualify for Chapter 7 and would have to pay a chunk of our debt back anyway.

I was thinking maybe I could voluntarily resign from my job. If I am not working I will have more time to go back to school next semester, full-time. Money will be really tight, but we are living with my mother-in-law right now so we don’t have any rent to pay, just some of the utilities.

In six months we can revisit the bankruptcy option and then we will qualify for Chapter 7 with my husband’s income alone. Here are some numbers: We owe about k in credit card debt alone. I will net about k in the next 6 months. Is it even worth it?

Please don’t judge me, I don’t need any rude comments from anyone. Yes, I realize that I am posting my dirty laundry online, but this is not my whole detailed story, just enough info to maybe get some much needed advice.

Thank you in advance.

I just filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy, and filed for 2006 (i worked all year) but did not file years 2000, 01, 03, 04, or 05. In 2002, I did because I got a job with Border Patrol but worked only 3 months. The rest of the time (years) I was either in school or had no job or both. I just got a letter from the IRS that they want my tax returns from those years. I didn’t file, and they want a reason why.
What are the penalties ( I was told I didnt have to file) or what should I say? Would I have to pay penalties for not filing? I’m scared (IRS is scary) and just want to know what I should do? I need it back in 12 days (the letter). Any help would be great!

The other owners of GM include the CANADIAN govt. and a union retiree trust fund.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124646098696280443.html

General Motors Corp. will file for an initial public offering of shares sometime next year, according to a timetable laid out in a U.S. bankruptcy court on Wednesday.

I used to be very responsible with my money. I have about 3 years worth of college but never finished with an bachelor’s degree. I used to work and have a great life and my own apartment. When I moved back home, My very negative mother and somewhat controlling parents greatly rubbed off on me. I have had trouble ever since. With college, jobs, and money and ended up filing bankruptcy, because I was trying to rebel against their lectures on credit cards. Now I cant do anything. My mom has become this mean dictator, and I see her true colors. My dad just doesn’t understand. I need to get an apartment and I know I could keep my job after I got my own apartment. I’d just visit my friends and limit my time with my negative mother!
Do you think there is any chance the bank would loan me about 1,500 dollars for a loan on an apartment?? I am also a part time college student.
thanks so much.

I always liked their clothes because they look like people clothes, not doll looking clothes with weird colors and silly stuff sewn on. They were higher priced, but not unreasonable and things always went on sale.

Some of the toys were unique too and I liked the chairs (they were nicer than pottery barn kids).

Now they have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and are closing for good. They don’t take anymore orders online and I don’t live in CA where the last stores are to stock up. Do you know any similar stores or sites?

And I hate the Babys-R-Us here, the staff is always unknowleagable and in a group at the front of the store chit-chatting. I always have to try and help myself or just get frustrated and leave. Plus, the clothes are usually more like the doll clothes I don’t like.

Obama, Clinton Campaign advisers tied to lending crisis

By Ken Dilanian, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — On the campaign trail, Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama have proposed cracking down on the predatory lending that they say helped fuel the foreclosure crisis.
Both presidential candidates, however, rely on close advisers who had oversight roles at financial institutions that went bust because of subprime loans.

Clinton’s campaign manager, Maggie Williams, earned at least 5,000 serving from 2000-07 on the board of Long Island-based Delta Financial, which filed for bankruptcy last year after a history of high-cost loans to low-income borrowers, according to public records.

Obama’s national finance chairwoman, Penny Pritzker, was chairwoman of the board of a Chicago-area bank in 1993 when it adopted a subprime business strategy that regulators say ultimately led it to collapse in 2001.
